Though many gamble for fun without realizing its effects on their lives, problem gambling is an extremely serious condition that can have profound repercussions. Problem gambling may result in depression, anxiety, substance abuse or even suicide if left unchecked. There are various solutions available to address a gambling disorder and organizations specialize in helping those overcome their addiction to it; one or two problem gamblers won’t set off an uncontrolled firestorm but may greatly impact family, friends, coworkers or teammates who come into contact with them on a daily basis.

College athletic departments and their athletes are also working hard to educate athletes on the new NCAA regulations. According to Kyle Snoke, Associate Director of Compliance at Ohio State University, Ohio State has been instructing its students since January on how to abide by NCAA regulations.
Athletes who are gambling can now get help via hotlines and organizations specializing in this issue. A free screening may also be arranged, to assess any risk for gambling disorders; should any be present, early action should be taken immediately before any issues worsen.
This can be a shocker for athletes who had anticipated betting on their team this year. However, the NCAA provides various levels of leniency when reinstating athletes depending on how much was bet; those making bets of $200 or less likely only need to take an anti-gambling rules and prevention course while those wagering more would face more substantial sanctions from NCAA officials. In this way, they attempt to strike a balance between student athlete needs and those of general society members.
The NCAA is taking steps to make getting help for gambling easier for athletes. They recently revised their reinstatement guidelines so that athletes who bet on college sports at other schools could face half-season suspension instead of losing an entire year’s eligibility; additionally, these new reinstatement guidelines offer options such as mediation or educational classes designed to address gambling addiction issues.
NCAA athletes, coaches and staff members are currently prohibited from placing any bets on any sports at either the collegiate or professional levels; this despite the increase in legalized sports gambling across many states.
